Safaricom is scheduled to launch a new payment method via Mpesa that will enable its customers to use a QR code to transact, a development aimed at reducing process risk.
In a statement, the company said the product would provide a seamless experience that is secure and hassle-free.
”Imagine a seamless experience; secure, no hustle of keying in details, no risk of paying to the wrong number,” Safaricom said in a statement.
The network further added that it has partnered with payment service providers, banks, and card schemes, among others to bring ‘ScanUlipe’
”We are proud to have been working with payment service providers, banks, card schemes, among others to bring you #ScanUlipe”, the statement read.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said the service will be oversighted by parents or guardians to raise a financially healthy generation
“The service seeks to empower parents and guardians to raise a financially healthy generation who are prepared for a cashless world,” he said.
Ndegwa said the current generation has been born into technology, the internet, and a cashless world, adding they are seeking inclusion and independence in this digital world.
The planned launch comes barely a day after the service provider launched a new digital platform, dubbed ‘myCounty App’, that will enable counties digitise all their services in one place providing a single, citizen access channel to the residents.

It will allow users select their county of residence, linking them to the specific county’s services for processing of requests.
The platform will include payment for county services, revenue management systems, a citizen reporting and engagement tool and solutions around agriculture, health, utility bills and SME programs.
In addition, all users can also access services from other non-residential counties which will enable payment of parking fees and other common fees.
In a bid to woo teens and preteens aged between 10 to 17 years, Safaricom had in November 2022 added another segment M-Pesa Go.
M-Pesa Go will allow subscribers to send and receive money, purchase airtime and bundles, use Lipa na M-Pesa services and access M-Pesa Super App dubbed as ‘M-Pesa Go App.’
