Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has received Ksh10 million from Huawei Kenya to support wildlife and environmental conservation through the Lewa Safari Marathon scheduled for June 24, 2023.
Huawei Kenya Deputy CEO Sheng Kaifu said the company has been keen on environmental preservation in the coutry for 16 years now.
“Huawei is committed to supporting environmental and wildlife conservation which we have done for the past 16 years,” Sheng said.
He noted that by supporting the conservancy, the lives of the wildlife at the facility will be preserved for future generations.
“The conservancy is home to some of the rarest wildlife and we know through our support and the difference we make in preserving the iconic species at the conservancy for future generations as well as the surrounding communities,’’ he added.
Huawei joins Safaricom in the conservation efforts after the telecommunications service provider also invested Ksh10 million towards the 2023 season of the marathon.
“We are proud to be part of this noble cause as we run to create awareness and take action to conserve our wildlife, we have been part of Lewa Safari’s journey of success since its inception in 2000, we are proud to extend our partnership as we sponsor the event for Ksh10 million,’’ Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO said.
The Lewa marathon has raised millions of dollars to fund wildlife conservation and community development in Kenya over the last 24 years. The annual event has hosted runners of all abilities for almost two and a half decades, from elite professionals like Marathon World Record Holder Eliud Kipchoge, to amateur runners and walkers alike.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy’s CEO, Mike Watson said that Lewa Safari is an important component of conservation fundraising community efforts, further noting that it is also regarded as a world-class sporting event.
“It’s your chance to be part of something extraordinary that brings people together from all walks of life, cultures, and backgrounds with shared values, whether you’re an experienced runner or just starting, the event has something for everyone, and by participating, you’ll not only have an unforgettable experience, but you’ll also be positively impacting our planet,” Watson said.
How to register for the Marathon
Registration for the event was launched on March, 14, 2023 in Nairobi.
Interested runners can register for the marathon on the Lewa Safari Marathon website, and make their contribution towards conservation of iconic and critically endangered wildlife including, Grevy’s Zebra, Lions, Elephants and Giraffes.
