Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC, the entity that Global Partnership for Ethiopia in cooperated to run its Telecommunications Operator License in the country has received a 15 year license to run its operations.
A statement from Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) said “Pursuant to Articles 40 and 41 of the Tender Regulations, the Designated Licensee (Global Partnership for Ethiopia) shall incorporate a local company within forty-five (45) calendar days following the designation date, and the local company shall execute the Provisional License Agreement executed by the parent company within three (3) working days of the commercial registration date”.
It said that ECA issued Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC with a nationwide full-service Unified Telecommunications Service License to the effective from 9 July 2021, valid for a term of fifteen (15) years, subject to fulfillment of all license obligations.
Early in the month, Mr. Anwar Soussa as the Managing Director (MD), a Greek national was appointed to be the first Managing Director of the company.
As a consortium, Global Partnership for Ethiopia has Safaricom owning 55.7 percent of the consortium, Sumitomo Corporation has 27.2 percent shares, Vodacom 6.2 percent and CDC Group has 10.9 percent.
As the telco gets ready to start operations in 2022, it will roll out GSM network to build their mobile telephony platform for the country.
