Kenya government has over 13,700 Elephant and Rhino trophies

The government has declared that it has 13,556 Elephant ivory and 260 Rhinoceros Horn in its possession as at December 31, 2018.

In a gazette notice signed by Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, the Elephant Ivory weighs 61,483.22 kilograms while the Rhinoceros Horn weighs 546.13 kilograms.

Under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013, the government is supposed to audit and publish yearly number of trophies in its possession.

The law states that the published trophies shall not those kept for cultural purposes.

The trophies are government property of government and include any trophy found without an owner, any animal found dead or killed by accident or mistake, any animal killed in defense of life, or in other circumstances authorized by the law and any animal killed by a member of the Service in the course of duty.

Dealing in trophies is illegal and no person can operate as a trophy dealer without a license issued by the government.

Only the Cabinet Secretary for wildlife may grant a trophy dealers’ license. The licenses expire on the 31st December of the year issued or on the date specified in the license.
